What is tallow and why is it good for skin?
Tallow is a nutrient-dense lipid rendered from grass-fed beef fat. Its fatty-acid profile is nearly identical to human sebum, which is why skin recognizes it, absorbs it quickly, and uses it efficiently. Grass-fed tallow is naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E, K, B12, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and anti-inflammatory lipids that support barrier repair and help skin stay smooth, hydrated, and resilient. Unlike synthetic moisturizers, tallow provides biocompatible nourishment, meaning it works with your skin rather than sitting on top of it.
Beef fat on my face? Surely this is some new fad, right?!
Not at all — tallow is one of the oldest skincare ingredients in human history.
For thousands of years, cultures around the world used rendered animal fats (especially beef tallow) for moisturizing, healing, and protecting the skin. It was a staple for Ancient Romans, First American Tribes, pioneers, and homesteaders long before modern lotions and seed-oil formulas existed.
What is new is the recent return to whole-ingredient, bio-compatible skincare. People are rediscovering that tallow’s fatty-acid profile is remarkably similar to human sebum, making it absorb quickly and support the skin barrier far more naturally than synthetic moisturizers.
So no — it isn’t a trend.
It’s a return to what worked for generations, backed by modern quality standards and clean, simple ingredients.
Will tallow clog my pores?
Short answer: No — tallow is considered low-comedogenic.
Tallow sits between 0–2 on the comedogenic scale, making it one of the least pore-clogging moisturizers available. For comparison, coconut oil ranks around 4, which is far more likely to cause congestion in acne-prone skin.
Tallow’s similarity to human sebum actually helps balance oil production, support a healthier moisture barrier, and reduce the dryness–overproduction cycle that can lead to breakouts.
Is your tallow grass-fed and where is it sourced?
Yes. We use 100% grass-fed & finished tallow sourced from small, local farms in Oregon’s Willamette Valley.
The cattle are raised on pasture, without grain finishing, which leads to a cleaner, more nutrient-rich fat profile. We triple-filter every batch for purity, stability, and a neutral scent, ensuring consistent quality from jar to jar.
Does it smell like beef?
No — our triple-filtered tallow has a neutral scent.
Raw tallow can carry a mild beef aroma, but we refine ours using a heat–strain–cool process repeated three times. This removes impurities, trapped proteins, and micro-particles that may cause odor.
The final product is clean, neutral, and blends seamlessly with essential oils without any “beefy” after-note.
How do I use the Face Cream or Body Butter?
A little goes a long way. Start with a pea-sized amount, warm it between your fingertips, and massage it into clean skin. Use a pea-sized portion for hands, and double that amount for arms or your face.
Face Cream: Designed for quick absorption and daily wear. Use every morning and night, especially after cleansing or showering.
Body Butter: Richer and more protective. Ideal for dry areas, post-shower moisture, or overnight repair.
Both products melt on contact, absorb efficiently, and leave skin soft without a greasy finish.
Can I use this under makeup?
Absolutely. Tallow functions as a skin-compatible primer.
Because it mimics human sebum, it absorbs rather than slipping around like many oils and silicones. Once absorbed (give it 1–2 minutes), foundation and concealer grip well without pilling. Many customers find it reduces dry patches and improves the longevity of their makeup throughout the day.
Texture changes in warm or cold weather
During warm months, you may notice your tallow product softening or slightly melting in transit. This is completely normal. Because our butters and creams are whipped, they contain small pockets of air that can collapse when warmed. This does not affect the quality, safety, or performance of the product. You can use it as-is, or re-whip it at home if you prefer a fluffier texture.
In colder weather, the texture may become firmer or stiffer. Once the product returns to room temperature, it will soften again and return to its normal feel.
Cold temperatures can also occasionally cause pilling — tiny waxy beads that form when certain fatty acids (primarily stearic acid and palmitic acid) naturally solidify faster than the rest of the tallow. This separation is cosmetic only and does not reduce the product’s quality, safety, or effectiveness. The pilling will melt on contact with your skin.
